OpenAI’s Discounts Pull Coding Work at Rippling and Replit From Anthropic
Rippling’s OpenAI share rose from 16% to 52% since May, The Information reports; Replit got over 30% off.
Price is now moving coding workloads between the two biggest labs, by the reported numbers.
@kimmonismus writes that OpenAI is winning over Anthropic customers with steep discounts, gaining coding workloads at companies like Rippling and Replit while potentially deepening its own losses.
@choblin29 sums up the report from The Information. Replit moved most of its AI spending to OpenAI after getting more than 30% off a contract worth more than $100 million a year. Anthropic had refused to extend Replit’s previous discount unless it committed to spending more. Replit needed just hours to change its code, the post says.
| Company | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Rippling, Anthropic share of coding work | 57% (May) | 18% |
| Rippling, OpenAI share of coding work | 16% (May) | 52% |
| Replit | Most AI spending on Anthropic | Most on OpenAI, more than 30% off |
| DataCamp | Not given | Offered 40% off, conditional on using Codex |
@DYoung_AI cites Rippling CEO Parker Conrad: the company sought to cut costs, and OpenAI proved cheaper. DataCamp estimates a broader deal could cut its costs by 80% to 90%, according to @choblin29.
The catch, @choblin29 writes, is that OpenAI previously projected it would spend more on compute this year than it expects to generate in revenue. @amir, whose post @DYoung_AI links as the source, calls the discounting “~serious~.”
@ahameddolon notes that Claude is still selectable on Replit, but OpenAI is now the default, and most people never touch the model picker. @kimmonismus sees a limit to the strategy: Anthropic’s renewed lead on OpenRouter suggests better models can quickly win users back.
