Nadella: Build Verification Systems Around Models
Microsoft research in Nature extends weather forecasts to two to six weeks.
Microsoft research published in Nature this week shows how machine learning can improve weather forecasts two to six weeks out, CEO Satya Nadella wrote on October 16. That window has historically been very difficult to predict.
Nadella said the work could help people better prepare for extreme weather, manage natural resources and make more informed decisions in agriculture.
He drew a broader lesson: the future may not just be about ever-more-capable models, but about building intelligent verification systems around them, systems that learn where models are systematically wrong, reason about cause and effect, and continuously calibrate predictions against reality.
