Washington Orders DeepSeek Out of Federal Agencies

DHS tells civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek and products built on it; DeepSeek reportedly helps design Huawei chips.

The US is pulling DeepSeek out of civilian federal agencies.

The US Department of Homeland Security is ordering civilian federal agencies to remove DeepSeek and third-party products built on it, and to stop buying them, @kimmonismus reports.

He sees it partly as a response to China’s move on tech exports: China is proposing tighter export controls on certain AI technologies, while Washington restricts Chinese models inside government.

@kimmonismus reads both moves as part of a broader push toward AI sovereignty, with governments tightening control over which technologies can leave their borders and whose models they allow in.

@MiaAI_lab: “Was only a matter of time. DeepSeek now, GLM and others later.”

DeepSeek is reportedly working on chips with Huawei.

DeepSeek is reportedly helping design Huawei’s future AI chips to make frontier-model training possible without Nvidia, @kimmonismus reports. The goal is to train frontier AI entirely on Chinese chips, while TileLang software makes switching between platforms easier.

Major hurdles remain, he says, in chip performance, manufacturing capacity and the reliability of large training clusters. On Tuesday, DeepSeek open-sourced DeepInfer, which already runs on Huawei Ascend 950 as well as NVIDIA SM100.
