Altman Reportedly Sketched Three Endgames for Superintelligence
A watchdog, a CERN-style body for the labs, or one company that can “melt everyone else’s GPUs.”
Sam Altman reportedly laid out three possible endgames for superintelligence to OpenAI staff.
According to The Information, as relayed by @kimmonismus, the three paths are:
| Path | Description |
|---|---|
| Watchdog | An international body, modeled on the atomic energy agency, that enforces AI safety standards |
| CERN-style body | The major AI labs effectively combine their work under one organization |
| Single winner | One developer achieves self-improving AI, gains overwhelming economic power and uses it to “melt everyone else’s GPUs” |
Altman explicitly rejected the third scenario: “Obviously I think that one’s terrible.”
He also reportedly told staff that OpenAI cannot afford to lose ground to competitors.
@kimmonismus says more realistic scenarios are being envisioned, because AI is gaining such momentum that global coordination is becoming necessary.
